Enyimba Faces Hefty Penalties; Rangers Also Hit with Fines

In a dramatic turn of events following the Matchday 35 fixture in Enugu on Sunday, June 9, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed significant sanctions on both Enyimba International of Aba and Rangers International of Enugu. The NPFL sanctions Enyimba and Rangers as a consequence of multiple rule violations by both clubs.

Enyimba International’s Infractions and Sanctions

Enyimba has been hit hardest, facing a total fine of N10,000,000 (Ten million Naira). Additionally, the club has been penalized with the forfeiture of three points and three goals. This severe punishment follows a series of disruptive actions, particularly against match officials, which led to the premature cessation of the game.

Among the specific charges against Enyimba are breaches of Rules C9, B6.23, B13.18, C1.1, and B13.24. One notable charge, B6.23, resulted in a N5,000,000 fine for disrupting the live broadcast of the match. Furthermore, Enyimba was ordered to forfeit three points and three goals to their opponents for obstructing the execution of a penalty awarded against them, an act that brought the game into disrepute.

The NPFL has mandated Enyimba to identify and present for further investigation and potential sanctions the players and officials involved in the disruptions. The named players include Eze Ekwutoziam (Jersey No.6), Chibuike Nwaiwu (Jersey No.27), and Akanni Elijah (Jersey No.10).

Rangers International’s Violations and Fines

Rangers International, the host team, has also been penalized for several breaches. They have been fined N5,000,000 (Five million Naira) and awarded three points and three goals as compensation for the misconduct of Enyimba. The charges against Rangers include the sale of tickets beyond the stadium’s capacity, resulting in overcrowding and compromising the safety of players, officials, and fans.

The NPFL cited Rangers for failing to provide adequate security before, during, and after the match, as well as insufficient crowd control measures and allowing unauthorized access to restricted areas. These violations fall under Rules B15.24, B13.52, and B13.52.1.

Next Steps for the Clubs

Both Enyimba and Rangers are required to comply with Rule C26 and respond to the summary jurisdiction and sanctions within 48 hours of the notice. They must communicate their decision to either accept the sanctions or opt for a disciplinary panel within seven working days.

The NPFL sanctions Enyimba and Rangers, underscoring its commitment to maintaining discipline and ensuring the safety and integrity of the league. These penalties serve as a stern warning to all clubs about the consequences of violating league rules and regulations.
